the only thing i can say is that the footage of the turbine is up wind, to get the noise you need to be downwind. i do agree though the sound is minimal, i do alot of work with turbines and they are nothing like the media makes it out to be.

thanks for the post…I work on wind farms everyday and they put out very little noise once initial construction is complete. They also have setbacks (required distance from occupied homes) on all wind farms so you would never live directly under one.

you should learn how to spell

  7. Renewable energy

Maybe it would make a noise if one of those geese hit it..

  8. Solar Energy

Thanks for the great illustration. There is lots of controversy here in Maine, too.

therefore the money generated by them ultimately comes from government who of course are funded by us…which would be ok if WT’s actually produced some sort of benefit but sadly this is not the case.
They are political statements cynically interlinked with big business and really have very little to do with the environment and our best intentions.

Take a look at how they are funded. It’s a different system in the US than Europe but still amounts to the same thing.
You guys grant huge tax breaks to any corporation that funds the development of a wind farm (calculated by the theoretical maximum output).
Here, it is a system known as the renewables obligation certificate (a law stating that all energy suppliers must provide 15% through ‘green means’).
Basically no business would invest in WTs purely to produce and sell electricity…

    Hello Edi’.
I’m not arguing about the noise as I’d say that that was an issue pretty much last on the list of negatives about WTs usually bleated only by people who live in close proximity to them.
There is a tremendous amount of waffle and untruths spoken about these things and if western governments carry on this absurd campaign designed wholly to win votes from a hoodwinked electorate we may very well end up with power outages of a nature that would certainly change your view…

Actually, the range is 8 to 40 MPH. We have a wind farm near our lake house in Putnam, IL. The sign at the observation point is where I got that info. And, they are extremely quiet. We stood directly beneath them and he only sound you hear is a light whooshing noise as the blades pass: I would say no louder than an idling car.

    Try getting your facts straight.

    bullshit

  16. Renewable energy

Shouldn’t be a question whether they’re noisy or not but more if they actually serve any particular purpose other than making a complete dogs dinner of the countryside.
The idea that all other forms of gen’ supplying the grid are turned on and off according to how windy it is is just nonsense and when its blowing less than 10mph or more than 30 the battery in my wrist watch’ll deliver infinitely more power than the largest farm of the tallest of these cynical, political absurdities.

wind turbines are not noisy atall. not the new ones anyway.

This video is amazing how it has stirred up such controversy. Uploaded November 29, 2006 it is still attracting more and more viewers with opinions. It is July 18, 2009 and just in one month there have been 4,636 more views (the total is now 84,089). This just fascinates me. Sorry for the stats. I enjoy the comments (pro and con), but the stats (the views) are what amaze me the most!
127 ratings – no honors. Gee, wouldn’t you like to see an update on the Fenner Wind Farm? How about it?

  19. Renewable energy

I don’t know about you, I don’t want to listen to the constant the pulsing noise all the time at the wind turbine’s turning speed * 3.

Your zeros are off. One 1.5 MW tower costs about $2 million. A 3 GW two-unit nuke can be built for about $4 billion. The cost per nameplate capacity is about the same, but the nuke has a capacity factor upwards of 95% while the tower has a realistic factor of about 15%. Nukes can be used for baselode, wind can’t. Wind requires about 50 acres per MW; a nuke can fit 3 GW on less than 600 acres, or about 0.2 acres per MW.

I’ve skimmed the comments and yours is the first one where I’m relatively confident that the poster is above the age of 14.

This is so obviously a) professionally produced and b) completely phony that I am amazed that anyone with brains enough to turn on a computer took it seriously.

    Give me a break.

My point is that he is comparing apples with oranges. Of course, we hear sounds everyday, but they differ with regard to loudness and duration. The problem with wind farm noise is that it is a constant unnatural noise that overwhelms people.

  24. wind farm

its thought that wind turbines are very loud.. he is comparing the wind turbine with the noise everyone DOES hear everyday..
