2013 is the inaugural year for the Globe-athon: The Walk to End Women’s Cancer. The brainchild of a gynecologic oncologist in Washington D.C., the seeds of the Globe-athon were planted a few years ago when he organized a 72-hour relay around the U.S. Capitol with a few colleagues to help promote the annual National Race to End Women’s Cancer. With each year, the relays grew in popularity…and then the idea of the Globe-athon struck: What if people across the globe all organized a walk on the very same day?  Now THAT would get people’s attention!

We have reached out to physicians and organizers around the world and been inspired by the enthusiastic response. The Globe-athon has become a grassroots movement at its finest, with every country organizing its own event with our advice and support. Mirroring the global diversity of the participants, we’ve assembled an international team to help get the Globe-athon off and running, including graphic designers in Mexico City and New Zealand, developers in Germany, producers in the United States, and photographers in Belgium and Austria.

We’ve also assembled a terrific brain trust of committed and passionate people for the Advisory Board, including PR guru Karen Bate who works with the Foundation for Women’s Cancer and the National Race to End Women’s Cancer, documentary filmmakers Dicey and Nneka Scroggins of Pinkie Hugs, LLC, Success in the City’s CEO and social media expert Cynthia de Lorenzi, and Dr. Carol McIntosh, a renowned doctor and recipient of the OBE (Order of the British Empire) bestowed on her by Queen Elizabeth II. It’s an eclectic group, united and empowered by the will to defeat cancer, one step at a time.

All U.S.-based Globe-athon events will support the Foundation for Women’s Cancer and National Race to End Women’s Cancer. We are extremely grateful to all of the countries and participants around the world uniting in this inaugural Globe-athon: Walk to End Women’s Cancers – because one step can make a world of difference!
